Han Tao was established as the Chinese Club in 1967 by Dr. Tai-Wu Kao with the goal of sharing the Chinese culture with the LMU community. In 1997, LMU Chinese Club changed its name to Han Tao (漢道) meaning "the Chinese way", representing the club's overarching mission and reflecting the collaboration and mutual support fostered between several API organizations on campus such as Isang Bansa, Kyodai, and Na Kolea. Over the years, Han Tao has held a wide variety of events in the spirit of celebrating Chinese culture and creating a welcoming community. Observing traditional holidays such as Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and Chinese New Year allowed Chinese-American students to feel at home while also sharing cultural experiences with all interested students. Planning events such as Chinese Cultural Night or collaborating with other cultural organizations provided exciting new ways of celebration and bringing students together. Han Tao members have always came from a diverse range of backgrounds, all finding common ground in food, activities, and adventure. The 2022-2023 academic year marks the 55th anniversary of Han Tao. The constant maintaining of tradition alongside the evolving nature of the club over the past half-century has enabled Han Tao to expand from humble beginnings to become one of LMU's largest cultural organizations.
